  1. How to install an aquarium air pump An air pump is responsible for sucking in air from outside of the fish tank and pumping it into a submerged aquarium apparatus. Therefore, you need a few air pump accessories to guide the air flow in the right direction and at the right pressure. For most beginners, we recommend getting a roll of airline tubing and check valve to get started. Use airline tubing to connect the air pump outside of the aquarium to the aquarium device (e.g., sponge filter, fish tank decoration, etc.) inside the...
  2. Do I need an air pump for my aquarium? An air pump is a mechanical device that sits outside of the fish tank and uses electricity (either from a wall outlet or battery power) to pump air into the aquarium. The air travels from the air pump to the fish tank decoration or device, creating bubbles that float to the surface and pop. You only need an air pump if you are using an aquarium device, such as: Air stone Aquarium bubbler Sponge filter Undergravel filter Corner box filter Moving bed filter Fish tank decoration or ornament Bre...

  4. How do I clean up the "dirt" at the bottom of my aquarium? If you see a brown or black, dirt-like substance collecting in your fish tank gravel or sand, most likely it is mulm (also known as detritus or debris). When organic material – like fish poop, leftover fish food, and plant leaves – decompose in the aquarium, it turns into mulm, which is very similar to the compost you use in gardens. Mulm may look dirty, but it's full of nutrients that are extremely beneficial for aquarium plants. Read our full article on mulm to find out how to remove or...
  5. Who do we buy from? We don't disclose our vendors. This helps us remain competitive. Also for individual stores, proximity to vendors, water parameters etc all play a part in which wholesalers will make sense for you to be purchasing from. No one starts with great pricing, without proving to the supplier the volume they can move. With time more vendors will approac...

  8. Why is my plant dying or melting? It is normal for plants to "melt" when they change environment. There are a few causes for this, one would be different water parameters. It is likely your water is different from ours and the plant will want to restructure and get it's roots in place to start taking in nutrients. This lag time can cause the plant to consume itself to keep itself alive during the transition. (For more details, read our article on crypt melt.) Another cause would be a plant converting from emersed ...
  9. pH In Your Aquarium We generally like to run all of our tanks at a pH of 7.0 to 7.8. If you don't have this range, it doesn't mean it can't work for your fish. It's just a great range to be in if your tap water is already there. We recommend not modifying it if you're already in this range. If you are below this range, we use 1 pound of crushed coral sprinkled into the gravel for each 10 gallons of water to raise the pH slowly over time. This needs to be replaced from time to time, typically ...
